Working with English Language Learners in your social studies class
Social studies is often a difficult subject for English Language Learners. The vocabulary is challenging, the concepts do not lend themselves as well to being supported by visuals and hands-on learning as science does, there are fewer resources specifically targeting social studies and ELLs, and often teachers assume prior knowledge of culturally-based information that ELLs do not have. Nevertheless, ELLs can have a successful experience in their social studies classes. Look below for some ideas and resources you can use.
